<Kanwa News Jan 10, 2000> China has been using the phased array
radar technology to upgrade the KS1 medium range surface to air missiles.
China has been developing this type of missiles since early 1980s. The
upgraded KS1(A) has a longer range then KS1. It has two launching operations,
fixed and mobile launcher with twin missiles. The phased array radar
system is similar to the MPQ53 for the MIM-104 Patriot SAM.China might
have acquired the relevant technology from such countries as Israel.
However, sources claimed to Kanwa that the exterior feature of the actual
search/track radar under development for the KS1(A) is something between
the phased array radar systems for the MIM-104 Patriot and S300PMU1.
KS1(A) search/track radar is able to engage 3 targets at the same time.
As the rocket engine has also undergone certain improvement, the upgraded
KS1(A) will have an effective range of 7-50km and an operation high
range of 0.5-27km. The same source also said that KS1(A) had already
completed some relevant launching tests, and currently the research
and development activities are mainly directed for future research and
technological applications.<Kanwa News China>
