<Kanwa news April 8, 1999> The Severnoye Design Bureau of Russia has
completed the design of the three new frigates, which are Project 11356 and
two other unnamed ones of 2000-ton and 1500-ton displacement respectively.
Loaded with the Klab-N Uran (SSN-25) SSM and the Shtil-1 SAM, Project 11356
has a 16-cell VLS, a Kashtan missile-gun-combined system, an A190 100mm gun,
a DTA53 torpedo launcher, a RBU 6000 anti-submarine launcher, and a Ka28
anti-submarine helicopter.
The frigate of 2000-ton displacement is equipped with two quadruple
range-extending Uran-E (SSN25) SSM launchers, one Klinok SAM (launch range
being 1.5 to 12 kilometers) along with a VLS, one A-190 100mm gun, two
AK630M 30mm automatic guns, one OTA-40 torpedo launcher, and one helicopter.
The frigate of 1500-ton displacement is designed to be totally sealed. The
stealth design is applied to its body. The vessel is equipped with two
quadruple range-extending Uran-E (SSN25) SSM launchers, one A-190 100mm gun,
and one Kashtan missile-gun-combined air-defense system. As for the SAM
launching system, customers are free to choose any one of the vertical
launching models.
In summary, the newly designed Russian frigates are all loaded with the
SSN25E, which has a longer launch range than does the Western "Hapoon" so
far as the anti-ship capability is concerned. In the meantime, the upgraded
Shtil-1 and Klinok SAM are generally used in the air-defense system of the
new Russian frigates. These missiles are now being or have been used in the
Chinese navy ( Andrei Pinkov).
