( KWIC Jan. 13 Andrei Pinkov ) In view of the situation where both the USA and Japan expedite the development of the TMD systems and the reconnaissance satellite was effectively used in the Persian Gulf War, the young and vigorous Chinese military scholars have recently tried to emphasize that the establishment of a space army ( Tianjun ) should be expedited. The US Pentagon has just claimed in a report that China is in the process of working on the experiment of laser anti-satellite weapons. In the meantime, the Western military observers believe that after 1996, China sped up its research of the TMD system.

According to the military source, the goal of winning a war is not only to destroy the material base of the enemy country but also to control and smash its information base . For this reason, the battlefield has been extended to the outer space. The Chinese military scholars believe that a space army with the Chinese characteristics should be set up in order to keep the various Chinese space vehicles from sabotage and to support the Chinese ground army, navy, and air force in their respective combat missions. They stress that under the circumstances where the Western European countries and Japan have, in recent years, become the ones that contend for the supremacy in the space, China can not hesitate and stand by unconcerned and on the contrary, it should expedite finding the command establishment and methods suitable for the operations of the space army.
